Whilst there were some good signs and some decnet football yesteday I certainly
am not as impressed as Terry E seems to be !

They had far too many decent chances for my money - better chances than us in
fact and a with better finishing from them the result could have been very
different. That is not to say that we did not just about deserve to win it. We
were gifted an early goal when a huge hopeful punt by Prutts - not a bad idea
given the conditions and the fact that their keeper , who was 3rd cholce at
Cardiff was making his debut having joined them on Friday - and it worked, the
keeper and defender collided with each other and the ball ran through to
Johnson who walked it into the empty net as we waited for the lino \ ref to
find something wrong with it.
The second goal, I think Terry has remembered it wong, was a tackle by Howson
who brought the ball forward and played a lovely weighted ball into the path of
the oncoming Kilkeeny who controlled it and hit it right into the corner giving
the keeper no chance.
Kandol had a decent chance with a header following a good move and cross but
he did not get enough 'glance' on it and it went well wide. Kilkeeny had
another opportunity again following some good passing but his side foot effort
was weaker than a back pass. We had a couple more long range efforts and then
in the last minute Beckford chose to hit it from a long way out, missing by
miles, when a simple ball to Elding would have givne him a good chance of
opening his account too.
Those chances apart we never really created much and despite another clean
sheet we were far from comfortable at the back, with Rui having a poor game,
Lubo not the player of last season, Frazer at times a fish out of water and
Casper and Kenton mixing mistakes with good work.
All four midfield players played quite well individually but as yet, to me ,
we are not a team. We have no width and no one willing \ able to run at the
opposition. As Terry says the midfield did interechange quite well at times and
there is certainly hope for the future if these 4 stay toghether.
Up front both Kandol and Beckford, as so often this season, suffered from a
lack of good service (no wingers \ decent crosses) and Beckford was often
forced into drifting out very wide to get on the ball - we need him in
dangerous areas.
Freedman came on for a bit at the end and looked and performed in a very
Robbie Blakesque manner. He had one or two good touches enough to make me think
my initial negative reaction to his signing may be proved wrong.
So overall another 3 points, another clean sheet, and some optimism with
games v Cheltenham and Port Vale to come which can , hopefully, let us build
some confidence and momentum, but a fair amount of concern too with a distinct
lack of width and times we looked like the strangers that they almost are in
football terms.
Still if Macca keeps the same players in then hopefully things will start to
gel.

couple of other things of note
Three players sat down and changed their boots 5 mins or so into the 2nd half
- that is how bad the rain was.
A mintues applause for Derek Dooley, held at ER on the basis that Dooley was
a friend of Kens !
The bozz eyed steward getting knocked over by Prutts, brought the 4th highest
cheer of the day (after the 2 goals and the scum result)
Only 21,000 turned up(and were very quiet) - great for this Division, poor
for us, will more take advantage of the Cat C game on Tuesday ? We are waiting
for our 500,000th fan of the season - who will be made a special guest of Uncle
Ken - wow what a prize !
Bates in prog notes claims that we have "10,751 ST holders valued at
£3.82million, as at March 1st (closing date ) we had processed 7,845
applications with a cash value (inc VAT) of £3.1m. A big thank you .....The bit
about VAT did make me wonder whether the £3.82m of this season did not include
VAT and was Ken , yet again, giving misleading info - cynical moi ?

Anyway roll on Tuesday and hopefully a better turn out and 3 more points.
