I think there may be an issue with the way some rich text/html  email clients 
code for in-line attchments.

I certainly have an issue with receiving my email using Lotus Notes Web Mail 
and people sending me in-line file attachments.

It appears that the sender doesn't encode the mime attachment correctly and/or 
the client program doesn't or can't extract the attachment.

In my experience this only happens with in-line attachments, so perhaps try 
checking the way you attach the word file.

I recommend that you get the free CutePDF writer (or any other PDF writer)
and send out PDF instead of Word. Everyone can download free PDF readers.
You write in word as normal then just print to the PDF writer.
