Theo Anderson - Environmental Issues
in Ghana, West Africa

Today on Earth Matters we're joined by Friends of the Earth campaigner from
Ghana, Theo Anderson. Theo recently visited Australia to attend the Friends
of the Earth International Annual General Meeting.

Theo begins our discussion by addressing the issue of imbalance between the
consumption patterns of the South and North. We then turn to the issue of
forestry - which is the main campaign for Friends of the Earth in Ghana. We
hear about the types of forest in Ghana, the logging practices, the current
industry, and the environmental repercussions following a loss of 90% of the
countries forest cover. Also, Theo explains the different responses from the
Ghanian communities with regard to implementing forest rehabilitation and
limiting logging.

Finally we discuss the impact of the World Bank and its agenda of structural
adjustment. For Ghana the onset of the World Bank in 1983 saw a massive
shift toward exporting the country's resources to increase their Gross
National Product. This saw a marked increase in environmental destruction in
the way of logging, gold mining and cash crops.

Theo is involved in the Sustainable Societies Program in Ghana which aims to
address the variety of environmental problems in Ghana while considering
social and cultural concerns.
