Dita Sari, chairperson of PPBI, one of Indonesia's independent trade
unions
is still imprisoned six months after the resignation of Suharto. Dita
was
arrested whilst leading a workers' rally in Surabaya, East Java and
sentenced to five years' jail in 1996. She visited Australia on several
occasions, addressing International Women's Day gatherings and attending
regional trade union forums. A campaign to free her has been actively
supported by the ICFTU (International Confederation of Free Trade
Unions),
Australian solidarity organisations and trade unions since her arrest
and
trial.

This rally to demand the release of Dita Sari and for the Indonesian
government to comply with international conventions on labour freedoms
has
been organised by Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor
(ASIET), Australia-Asia Worker Links (AAWL) and sponsored by Victorian
Trades Hall Council. A statement to be sent to President Habibie has
been
signed by Jenny George, President of the ACTU and Leigh Hubbard,
Secretary
of VTHC.
