5 April 1999

Dear Sydney siders

Radical Women, Red Letter Press, the No More Intimidation of Teacher [NMIT]
Unionists Campaign Committee and the Freedom Socialist Party cordially
invite you to a multi-purpose night out! It's on Saturday, 17 April from
7.30 pm in the upstairs room at Has Beans, 153 King Street, Newtown. They'll
serve a three course dinner for $20 or $15 concession, and the restaurant is
BYO.

As well as great food and political company, you will be supporting the
long-running campaign to defeat union busting and casualisation at Northern
Melbourne Institute of TAFE. Plus you'll get to participate in the Sydney
launch of "Voices of Color", the exciting new title by Red Letter Press.

"Voices of Color", edited by Yolanda Alaniz and Nellie Wong, is an
optimistic anthology. Writer activists from diverse racial and ethnic
backgrounds provide fresh outlooks on issues ranging from personal identity
and inter-racial solidarity to the realities of confronting racism, sexism
and homophobia, at work and in the movements, for social change.

The evening will be an opportunity to support the unfolding battle against
workplace discrimination in the Victorian TAFE system. The NMIT Unionists
Campaign Committee was established by an AEU stopwork meeting in April
1997.Workers walked off the job to protest the sacking of local union
leaders who were replaced by casuals. The case of former sub-branch
president, Alison Thorne, will be heard before the Discrimination Panel of
the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal on May 17. Former
sub-branch secretary, Barbara Morgan, will have her case heard later this
year. These determined women and their defence committee know their
experience is, unfortunately, not unique. Bullying, intimidation, nepotism
and blatant discrimination have reached epidemic proportions in TAFE. By
standing up to TAFE management, the NMIT campaign is fighting for the rights
of all workers to be active unionists.

We hope to have the pleasure of your company on April 17. Please RSVP by
calling Ray Jackson on 9318-0947 or via e-mail or by calling us STD in
Melbourne. We need to hear from you by April 15.

Yours in solidarity
Debbie Brennan, for Radical Women
Peter Murray, for the Freedom Socialist Party
Alison Thorne, for the No More Intimidation of Teacher Unionists Campaign
 Committee
