WOMEN'S RIGHTS ACTION NETWORK AUSTRALIA (WRANA)
TRIBUNAL COORDINATOR


The WRANA is planning an Australian Tribunal on Women's Human Rights 
to  be held in Melbourne on Friday 21 May 1999. The Tribunal aims to 
demonstrate the failure of the Australian Government to fulfill many 
of its human rights obligations to women. Personal testimonies from 
up to 10 women will be considered by a panel of three independent 
judges. The event will be widely publicised and contribute to 
national and international monitoring of Australia's human rights 
record, including the 5-year review of progress towards implementing 
the commitments undertaken at the 1995 World Conference on Women in 
Beijing.  

The WRANA will employ 2 part-time Tribunal Coordinators to coordinate and
facilitate the work of WRANA's Tribunal Working Group which has been
developing this project since August 1998. The Coordinators will have the
same job description and be jointly responsible for dividing the work and
ensuring tasks are completed.

The WRANA is seeking applications for one of the Tribunal Coordinator
positions. The other position has already been filled. The position is for
14 hours per week, commencing in the week beginning 15 February 1999 and
finishing in the week following the Tribunal at the end of May. The total
period of employment will be 15 weeks, which includes one week of holidays.

The Tribunal Coordinators will be formally employed by the YWCA (Victoria)
which is auspicing the project. They will be accountable to the WRANA
Tribunal Working Group for their work plans and activities and attend
weekly meetings of the Working Group. Day-to-day direction and support will
be provided by the Chairperson(s) of the Tribunal Working Group as required=
=2E

Nett salary is $280 per week ($20 per hour). Conditions are as specified
by the Social and Community Services Award. The Coordinators will be based
somewhere in Melbourne's inner suburbs (still to be determined).

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Tribunal Coordinators will work collectively and in consultation with
the WRANA Tribunal Working Group, to coordinate the successful running of
the first Australian Tribunal on Women's Human Rights in Melbourne on 21
May 1999. While the Tribunal Working Group has responsibility for the
overall planning, direction and execution of the project, the Coordinators=
'
role is to facilitate this work by maintaining an overview of activities,
developing an organisational infrastructure, delegating tasks and taking
responsibility for certain administrative tasks.

The responsibilities of the Tribunal Coordinators include:
1. providing support, information and assistance to Tribunal Working Group
members in the implementation of the Tribunal project plan to avoid
duplication, overlap, inconsistencies and unnecessary work and provide
effective coordination of all aspects of the Tribunal's development;
2. establishing appropriate office and administrative systems for the
project and ensuring that accessible and orderly records of the Tribunal'=
s
development are kept;
3. arranging national publicity using all forms of media in the lead-up to
the Tribunal, and for widespread media coverage of the Tribunal itself;
4. establishing an event management team of volunteers to undertake
production and logistical responsibilities for the orientation day prior to
the Tribunal and for the Tribunal itself;
5. arranging travel and accommodation for testifiers and judges as necessa=
ry;
6. participating in and reporting (verbally) to the Tribunal Working Group
at its weekly meetings;
7. preparing a final evaluation report of the Tribunal's development and
implementation.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants should have the following skills and experience:
*  the ability to work collectively and cooperatively with others
*  an understanding of the accountability processes involved with working
with a voluntary committee
*  a demonstrated commitment to feminist goals
*  demonstrated knowledge of women's rights/women's human rights
*  experience with managing or coordinating a funded short-term project
*  skills in office administration and organisation generally
*  computer and internet skills
*  skills in planning, reporting, writing and evaluation
*  delegation skills
*  ability to be self-directed and work independently
