______________________________________________________________ SEARCH FOR PROGRESSIVE PRACTICES IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT ______________________________________________________________ Hello, I am working on a research project looking at progressive policies, programs or practices developed in local government - that is, with some commitment to social change, equity or redistribution. I am looking for examples. They can be local or international, rural or urban, in any arena at all - from planning, housing to service provision, from employment policies to rates and charging systems (a rating system that subsidised low- income residents, for example, would be of interest). Good examples of open and transparent governance, interesting participatory practices, advocacy on broader political and socio-economic issues would all be most useful. We particularly seek current examples, but any cases in the recent past (successful or failed) could be helpful. We don't just want successes. Brave attempts that have failed are interesting, especially if we can establish the factors that thwarted them. Current attempts by individual councillors with or without the numbers; proposals for radical action from community groups that are attracting some local government interest; cases of local government resistance to conservative neo-liberal directives... all are relevant. If you have any information on cases that fit the above descriptions, or can suggest someone who might, or have a vague idea about a council somewhere that would need following up, I'd be most grateful if you could let me know - by phone: (03) 9925 3578 or email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] With thanks, Kate Shaw Kate Shaw School of Social Science and Planning Faculty of Constructed Environment, RMIT University GPO Box 2476V Melbourne 3001 phone +61 3 9925 1869 facsimile +61 3 9925 1855 end ============== Leftlink - Australia's Broad Left Mailing List http://www.alexia.net.au/~www/mhutton/index.html The Year 2000 Bug - An Urgent Sustainability Issue http://www.peg.apc.org/~psutton/grin-y2k.htm
