How does Marxism fit into Ecofeminism?
An International Women's Day Special!
"Women realise that there needs to be more gender awareness in the ecology
movement and more ecological awareness among feminists ... the thing which
all ecofeminists writers have in common, I think, is the fact that they see
the current global crisis as being a by-product of patriarchal ways of
reasoning ... so the global crisis is a gendered crisis" - Ariel Salleh
Today on Earth Matters we celebrate International Women's Day for 1999. On
the programme we're joined by Ariel Salleh, author of "Ecofeminism as
Politics - nature, Marx and the post-modern", Ila Marks, long-time
anti-uranium campaigner, and Margarita Windisch, activist in the women's
movement and member of the Democratic Socialist Party (DSP).
Today's discussion centres around the question of "How does Marxism fit into
Ecofeminism?". Margarita, Ariel, and Ila give their differing views about
the importance of encorporating the views and social theories of Karl Marx
into the politics of ecofeminism. We ask about the relevance of Marxism
today, the connection it has with ecofeminism and how Marx was specifically
"environmental"?
"Capitalism still exists and if anything is tightening it's grip on life ...
there is much in the Marxist analysis - which I don't think you find
anywhere else - that can help understand why that's happening." - Ariel Salleh
