Mining Uranium at Beverley

Today on Earth Matters we reflect on the approval of uranium mining at
Beverley in South Australia. Federal Environment Minister, Senator Robert
Hill, has been the focus of serious concern following his comments that
uranium mining at Beverley would be completely safe. Australian Conservation
Foundation campaigner in South Australia, David Noonan, joins us to make
some comments on the decision and also to speculate on the repercussions for
other uranium mining ventures in his state, such as Honeymoon. He also
expresses concern about the heightening potential for Australia to have a
nuclear waste facility, caused in part to its ongoing association with the
nuclear industry.

New South Wales Greens in the State Election

Lee Rhiannon is one of the Greens Upper House candidates in the New South
Wales state election. Held on Saturday March 27th, we speak with Lee in the
lead up to the big day about the local and statewide environmental concerns
that her party has been campaigning on. We also touch on the problem of
"bogus" green parties with such names as the Wilderness party. The NSW
Greeens hope to double their numbers in the NSW Parliament following March 27th.

Exxon Valdez - the oil disaster 10 years on

March 24th marked the tenth anniversary of the devastating Exxon Valdez oil
spill off Alaska. One decade on we hear from Friends of the Earth
campaigner, Cam Walker, about the state of the environment in the region and
how just 5 percent of the total oil spilled has been retrieved from the
environment. We also take a look at what, if anything, oil giant Exxon has
learnt from the spill and what is being done to avoid a repeat in the future.
