THIS WEEK On ABC Radio National's Background Briefing Program: --------------------------------------------------------- Sunday, April 18, 9.10am Repeated Tuesday, April 20, 7.10pm --------------------------------------------------------- OVERSEAS TRAINED DOCTORS: MORE THAN A QUESTION OF STANDARDS Produced by Bronwyn Adcock --------------------------------------------------------- PROMO: Doctoring is a big headache for politicians. In some parts of the country we've got too much medicine, and it's too expensive. In other parts, don't let your kids get sick till the pigs fly because there's no doctor at all. Yet, thousands of doctors are coming in, temporarily, but without taking any exams to practice here - if they're from the correct, preferably anglo, background. And that's a pain in people's necks. Take a pill on Background Briefing, this Sunday morning after the news at 9. --------------------------------------------------------- PRODUCER SUPPLEMENT: The debate over the number and availability of doctors has resurfaced once again. On a tour of rural Australia, Ministers who argue that we have an oversupply of physicians are told by angry communities of chronic shortages. Meanwhile, overseas-trained doctors who have permanent residency have gone on hunger strike to express their frustrations. They're ready and willing to practice their skills anywhere. They contend that they're forced to jump unreasonable and discriminatory hurdles while other doctors with temporary visas from Anglo-Celtic countries are not. And who makes the rules that govern our access to adequate medical care? --------------------------------------------------------- Transcripts now available on-line from last week's program: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/bbing --------------------------------------------------------- THE NZ PAINT JOB: BB 11/04/99 Produced by Ian Walker --------------------------------------------------------- ..........................................................
