Hundreds reported dead in Becora. Mario Carrascal�o goes into hiding in
Jakarta
Melbourne (Sunday, 18/4/99) -- The latest call from Dili says it looks as
though hundreds, perhaps as many as one thousand, people have been
slaughtered in the Dili suburbs of Becora.
Troops and militia have had the area sealed off all afternoon as they went
from house to house searching out pro-independence families, butchering
them, and looting, wrecking and burning their houses.
The report came from Julio Araujo, the brother-in-law of Xanana Gusm�o.
Julio Araujo himself is a target for the militias.
In Jakarta, President Habibie's Special Adviser on East Timor, Mario
Carrascal�o, has "gone to a safe place" following the arrival from Dili of
150 armed militiamen who have sworn to assassinate him.
In the inauguration of their anti-independence campaign yesterday, Mario
Carrascal�o was at the top of the militia's 270 name extermination list.
Militia leaders called him "the number one traitor against Indonesia".
Mario Carrascal�o today accused General Zaki, the former head of Indonesian
intelligence in East Timor, as the organising power behind the militias.
General Zahi is challenging President Habibie for the position of head of
state.
