March on Mayday
In October 1884 the Organised Trade and Labour Unions of the United
States and Canada passed a resolution in favour of the 8 hour day. This
demand was supported by workers' associations in America and in Europe.
On 1 May 1886 in Chicago a demonstration in support of the 8 hour day
was attacked by police and 6 workers died. Since then unions and
workers' organisations all over the world have called strikes and
demonstrations on May Day, to commemorate workers who have died in
struggle, and to stand together in support of working class interests.
