Govt tight-lipped on legal action against Reith
Wednesday 28 April, 1999 (7:55pm AEST)

The Federal Government is refusing to comment on the Workplace Relations
Minister being subject to legal action over last year's waterfront dispute.

Unions and the Labour Party are attempting to force the Minister to answer
questions in the Federal Court.

A spokesman for Peter Reith says the Minister will not be commenting on the
latest court proceedings before the Federal Court in Melbourne.

Federal Labor MP Lindsay Tanner has filed affidavits under the Freedom of
Information Act requiring Mr Reith to release a range of Government
consultancy reports circulated in 1997.

Mr Tanner and the ACTU believe the reports contain policy advice about the
planning of last year's waterfront dispute and how to remove or diminish
the power of the Maritime Union.

Mr Reith must respond in a month's time, while a hearing is scheduled for
late June.
