The Howard-Habibie meeting achieved nothing substantial, only legitimising
the process set underway by Jakarta. The militias remain armed and defiant.
Today reports come in from Dili that human rights offices have been
encircled by one terror gang militia. Streets remain patrolled by these
thugs. The Indonesian army, using these gangs run by landlords and
hoodlums, has carried out a de facto coup taking all control of civiilian
affairs in East Timor.
The UN has accepted the proposal to organise a vote on Jakarta's autonomy
proposals while the Indonesian army is still dictatorial force in East Timor.
Jose Ramos Horta has called on the Australian government to come out in
100% for East Timorese Independence.
Horta, and other East Timorese leaders, have called on all "Western"
governments to CUT ALL MILITARY AID TO INDONESIA.

Timor campaigner and wide of murdered Australian journalist Greg Shackleton
will speak on the May Day platform.
