Contract for dole

The unemployed will have to sign an agreement specifying what they will
do to get the dole, the federal government has announced.

Community Services Minister Larry Anthony said the extension of the
government's work for the dole scheme would take effect from July.

Job seekers would have to sign up to a work for the dole scheme,
literacy education or work training when they received unemployment
payments, Anthony said.

"What we've got to ensure ... is that people who are receiving say
Newstart Allowance, encourage them to prepare a work plan to ensure that
they can provide something back to the community or most importantly get
employment themselves," he told ABC Radio.

"As of 1 July this year ... we want to ensure that people will have to
sign an agreement so that they know their obligations for receiving
social security payments."

Anthony said job seekers would have seven days to sign an individually
tailored agreement if they wanted to receive the dole.

"What we're trying to do is to provide an action plan for them to make a
better evaluation of what they can do in their particular Labor market
and also giving them those options through the job Network to seek
employment," he said.

Anthony said six to 12 month age-related waiting periods for mutual
obligation activity would still apply, but the agreements would come
into effect immediately and would apply to all job seekers.
