Melbourne IndyMedia will transform the mediascape in Australia by enabling
anyone to become an online publisher and journalist.

Indymedia, the media channel which broadcast live the protests against the
World Trade Organisation in Seattle, has now been established in Melbourne.
IndyMedia will not only cover the September's World Economic Forum, but
will also provide an ongoing independent media channel for alternative news
producers to communicate with a global audience.

IndyMedia is a two-way news channel which enables anyone to publish stories
which contain text, images, audio and video. No technical knowledge is
required. If you can use a search engine or start a yahoo account on the
web, then you can publish a story on to IndyMedia.

IndyMedia is free of corporate and political influence. There are no
editorial policies. IndyMedia exists for people with a passion for
expressing the truth. Its technical development is supported by a network
of computer programmers located throughout the world who believe in the
need for a free and accessible media produced by the people for the people.
IndyMedia exists online, outside the mainstream, creating a space for the
expression of stories that are dismissed by the existing advertiser-driven
channels.

IndyMedia outlets are located throughout the world, from the Congo to
France, from Canada to Mexico. Recently, Sydney has established an
IndyMedia channel for the coverage of the Olympics and beyond.

The history of the IndyMedia system began in Australia. Sydney's Catalyst
collective was responsible for developing the community publishing engine
which is the heart of IndyMedia.

In mid-July 2000, members of SKA TV initiated the establishment of
Melbourne's IndyMedia channel as part of the move in to the digital
domain. Other independent media groups will be complementing their own
broadcasts and distribution by publishing on the IndyMedia channel.
