Dear colleagues,

This is a short update for information of folk 'outside' N25, but including
many in WA who have expressed an intention to participate in this
broad-based community event. (See also www.ecwa.asn.au/n25 .)

The N25 Convention will gather at 9 am on Saturday, 25 November 2000 in the
630-seat Elizabeth Jolley Lecture Theatre at Curtin University's Bentley
Campus. The morning programme is a 2-hour "warm-up" debate with full
audience participation, led by Tony Cooke (Secretary, Unions WA), Dr
Patricia Ranald (Public Interest Advocacy Centre, NSW) and Peter Westmore
(National President, National Civic Council).

After lunch, participants will divide to engage 16 specialist topics in
workshops totalling 28 hours of discussion, led by a galaxy of experts
including Bob Phelps (Director, ACF GeneEthics Network), Caroline Wood
(Amnesty International), Michael Beahan (United Nations Association WA), Sr
Veronica Brady (University of WA) and a host of other distinguished
parliamentarians and academics.

The topics include environmental impacts, sustainable economics,
agriculture and GMOs, labour standards and wage challenges, third-world
development, women's concerns, social justice, health and therapeutic
implications, democracy and sovereignty, the liability of multinational
corporations for human-rights abuses, "Big Brother" trends, the nuclear
industry, and the new protest movement exemplified by recent demonstrations
in Seattle, Melbourne and Prague. Emphasis is being given to finding
solutions which can be applied by civil society.

A flood of earlybird bookings has already been received, guaranteeing
success for the Convention, which is generously endorsed by many
organisations representing a broad spectrum of social and political
viewpoints. The conference fee is $43 (concession $33). The $10 concession
is available to 'earlybirds' before 13 October and will apply thoughout to
students, pensioners and other unwaged people.

The organisers are preparing a detailed outline of the conference and
speakers to be printed and/or forwarded as an RTF attachment to any who
request it. Information is also available online by courtesy of the
Environment Centre of WA at www.ecwa.asn.au/n25

Kind regards
