REMEMBER EAST TIMOR STILL NEEDS OUR SOLIDARITY
The Indonesian military (TNI)is still up to its old tricks causing violence
and
problems on the East Timor/West Timor border in conjunction with the
militias they
recruit, train, arm and pay .

They are also doing the same in West Papua which they have brutally
occupied since
1962. The West Papuans are Melanesians who have much more in common with
their ethnic
brothers and sisters across the border in PNG. They want their independence
and that is why the
TNI has stepped up its violence.

In the Moluccas (Maluku Province of Indonesia), the Indonesian military has
established Jihad
(holy war) Warriors, to instigate inter-communal violence. Since the
beginning of 1999, over
4,000 have died and 400,000 people have become refugees because of the
brutal activities of the
TNI and its Jihad Warriors.

These conflicts are being fomented by the Indonesian military in order to
undermine the
democratically elected Abdurrahman Wahid government and regain it lost
political power. The
decision by a number of western countries (Britain, the US and some
European nations) to renew
military cooperation with the Indonesian generals when they are still
carrying out their lethal
and criminal activities is to be deplored as this will contribute to
greater loss of life.

ACTION YOU CAN TAKE:

* Write to the Australian Government to pressure the Indonesian military to
end
the bloodshed and to call for the intervention of the United Nations

* Call on the Australian Government not to have any military cooperation with
the TNI and to encourage other governments to do the same

* Urgently speak out and propose resolutions against the human rights
violations in
Ambon/Moluccas, East and West Timor and West Papua in your church, union,
human rights
or community group and on talk back radio

* Write letters to the editor of your daily newspape, magazines or
newsletters of
   organisations that you belong to
