>Fools Festival for M1

In the leadup to M1 here in Brisbane the performance group I'm
with is organising a Fools Festival on April Fools Day -- Sunday
April 1. This will be an attempt to bring together lots of different
cultural activists under an anti-corporate banner then organise them
for ongoing work promoting the M1 blockade of the corporate
"community" throughout the month of April.

As part of this process we will most likely sponsor
workshops/training sessions during the Easter break. Many
people are taken with this approach and there may be a lot of
support for such a project especially among young people.

The festival will most likely be held in a park -- Kalinga Park -- on
Brisbane's northside with a focus on percussion, dance, puppetry,
theatre...and much else besides.

Many people may not be familiar with the resources that are
available for this form of cultural activism so we have established a
web page (below) and hope to run with some interviews and reviews
of various appoaches to this form of cultural intervention in the
pages of Green Left Weekly ( http://www.greenleft.org.) Among
these pending articles will be an interview with the extraordinary
Super Sonic Samba School which has taken drumming in
demonstrations to a fine art, a review of the standard DIY literature
published by Wise Fool Puppet Intervention and an analysis of the
work of such groups as Welfare State International and In The
Heart of the Beast. These groups are leading a world wide
resurgnance in democratic cultural intervention committed to street
activism and social change.

Anyone who is interested in liasing with us on this and swapping
ideas or seeking advice and support is encouraged to subscribe to
GRAFFITO (if you don't already that is!) -- an email discussion list --
by clicking on the line below and sending off a message.

We will also have a special Fools Festival web page up and running
by the weekend detailing the strong satiric and protest tradition
inherent in Fools Festivals before they were banned by the Church
and State authorities. The page will also link to Fools Fests
elsewhere and detail information on this ongoing cultural project
here in Australia.

People with particular expertise who would like to share their skills
are encouraged to get in touch so we can put then in contact with
folk who want to learn or would like to join a group project
