a union speaker and
a feminist speaker.
There'll also be theatre, stalls and other goodies. Oh, and it's free, of
course.
THE CAMPAIGN:
The NSW Labor govt wants to build yet another jail. It's their solution to
rapidly rising prison numbers, especially of Indigenous women, and the
fact that more and more people are going to prison for more and more
minor offences on longer and longer sentences. At the same time all our
social services are being slashed, leading to the conditions of poverty,
drug dependence, marginalisation, etc. that lead to people ending up in
jail.
The Stop the Women's Jail Campaign is a community group opposed
to the construction of the proposed new jail for women in western Sydney
(South Windsor), fighting for social services instead of incarceration, and
for fundamental change of the racist, sexist and capitalist system which
necessitates prisons in the first place.
The group is open to everyone and the next meeting is Tuesday March 27
5pm at Justice Action, 19 Buckland St (pink Breakout building just off
Broadway). Soon we're going to start weekly meetings at Newtown
Neighbourhood Centre or UTS or something, so keep in touch.
There's also an egroup you can get on by emailing to
