Sweatshop Warriors : Immigrant Women Workers Take On The Global Factory
Miriam Ching Yoon Louie, South End Press, $39.60
This book tells the stories of immigrant women sweatshop labourers, who,
by battling for justice through community-based workers' centres, are
challenging corporate culture and the traditional methods of union
organisation - as well as gender relations in their families and class
dynamics in their ethnic communities. These women are taking up their
own cause and making their own political connections in an effort to
achieve social and political justice, in a way that will provide
inspiration and encouragement to all of us seeking ways to resist the
effects of global capitalism.
Questions & Swords : Folktales of the Zapatista Revolution
As told by Subcommandante Marcos, Cinco Puntos Press, $45.00
This colourful and beautifully illustrated edition is the sequel to the
infamous Story of Colours. Including over a hundred colourful plates,
subcommandante Marcos shares two more stories; with the beautiful
simplicity of a myth, he explains the significance of the Zapatista
Rebellion to the 21st Century.
Executing Justice : An Inside Account of the Case of Mumia Abu-Kamal
Daniel Williams, St Martin's Press, $50.00
With a foreword by E.L.Doctorow, Williams, Abu-Jamal's defence lawyer,
highlights the troubling issues that have polarised partisans from both
ends of the political spectrum; and the, at times, deeply flawed nature
of the justice system especially in relation to the death penalty.
Propaganda and the Public Mind
Noam Chomsky interviewed by David Barsamian, South End Press, $49.40
The world-renowned dissident Noam Chomsky, in a candid and
conversational style, dissects the institutions that shape the public
mind by manufacturing consent. Focusing particularly on the media,
Chomsky penetratingly analyses the human consequences of power and
privilege, showing that critical analyses and activism can make a
profound difference in the multi-national corporate culture that we live
in.
Age of Propaganda : The Everyday Use and Abuse of Persuasion
Anthony Pratkanis & Elliot Aronson, W.H.Freeman and Company, $35.20
The Age of Propaganda should be read by those who feel uneasy about the
dominance of mass media on our everyday lives. Drawing upon contemporary
research in social psychology, Pratkanis and Aronson deconstruct the
methods employed to persuade the public and 'to create a distorted
vision of the world we live in'. Propaganda, they argue, has replaced
thoughtful discussion, therefore endangering meaningful debate in the
public spectrum.
Promise of a Dream
Sheila Rowbotham, Verso, $55.00
Rowbotham captures the spirit and verve of the sixties, winding together
one girl's coming-of-age story through the drama of political evolution.
While light and colourful, this book seriously appraises the connecting
strands of 1960s radicalism.
Made In Indonesia : Indonesian Workers Since Suharto
Dan La Botz, South End Press, $39.00
Noam Chomsky believes Made In Indonesia to be a highly informative and
penetrating study of the Indonesian workers' fight for freedom. This
fight began when the Indonesian labour movement emerged in the 1990s and
helped to bring down the Suharto government. These labour movements
continue to fight for the democratic rights of workers in the
post-Suharto Indonesia, at times battling multi-nationals like Nike.
