Vic Roads 'Paterson's Cursed' by locals
The winners have been chosen for the first annual "Paterson's Curse"
Environment and Human Rights Awards, presented by the Melbourne West
branch of The Australian Greens.
An enthusiastic crowd cheered the cheeky, often impassioned
nominations, which were made by members of local community and
environment groups. The winners were decided by volume of applause -
or boos and curses - from the audience.
The winners were:
- Paterson's curse award for attacks on human rights - Vic Roads, for
human rights losses such as air quality, sleep and safety from trucks
and chemical spills - especially along Francis Street, Yarraville.
This was a very close win from the trio of Phillip Ruddock, Department
of Immigration and Maribyrnong Detention Centre.
- Serrated tussock award for inappropriate development - Allied
Containers (Brooklyn), for bulldozing the Stony Creek without a
permit, building a large reinforced concrete bridge without a permit,
dumping City Link fill on a remnant pimelea grassland etc.
- Golden sewer award for damage to waterways - Mobil, for the recent
petrol spill in the Maribyrnong River.
- Boneseed award for lack of consultation - EPA and Marstels (equal
winners)
and the inspirational and positive:
- Grevillia award for the most inspiring local campaign - Valerie Noye
of Friends of Stony Creek. Val is a founding member of the group, a
tireless volunteer and recently retired as treasurer of the group
after 7 years. The nomination described her as "an unsung hero".
The Greens Senate candidate for Victoria, Scott Kinnear, presented the
awards - to the community groups fighting the winners!
