Tampa asylum seekers - let them land on Christmas Island
Dear Prime Minister,
I totally condemn your decision to force the 460 people on board the
Norwegian container ship Tampa out of Australian territorial waters at
Christmas Island. It is Australia's humanitarian duty to accept these
people, and to process any applications for asylum in a dignified and
humane manner.
I reject your specious claim that these people are a "threat" to
Austalia's national integrity. It is your government's action
against the Tampa, and your policy of mandatory detention of asylum
seekers, that has gravely undermined Australia's good name.
In contrast, the captain of the Tampa deserved our thanks and
admiration.
If this Tampa fiasco is the first action in a new policy to turn back
all boats bearing people to our shores, I register here my most vigorous
opposition. If it is simply an act of political expediency during a
tough week in politics, then your government has lost any sense of
principle.
Yours sincerely,
