Reconciliation is more than just knowing a few Aboriginal people-it's also
about changing the way in which you understand yourself as an Australian.
It is important to understand that reconciliation is not an end product so
much as a process which involves connecting with and building better
relationships with Aboriginal people, and indeed between all Australians.
It is a process which Don Dunstan began long before reconciliation was any
kind of a 'movement', one which he anticipated, which he indirectly aided
in creating and which he welcomed as a vital human rights and social
justice issue.
Colebrook Home was set up in 1926 at Quorn by the United Aboriginal
Mission. In 1944, the home moved to a smaller premises at Eden Hills. The
children who lived in Colebrook included some who were placed there by
their traditional mothers or non-Indigenous fathers because that parent was
unable to care for them, those who had been taken from their families by
non-Indigenous people to work for them and then ejected when their services
were no longer wanted and children who were forcibly removed by government
officials. In 1973, the Department of Community Welfare took on the
responsibility of caring for the children until finally, in 1981, Colebrook
Home was closed by the government. Colebrook Home was razed.
Colebrook Reserve is now a memorial to these children and their families.
