No New Women's Prison Campaign Update

The Vigil held outside the site of the new women's prison at Sth
Windsor was most successful with some excellent media coverage (radio
& especially Saturday's SMH 1.12.01).

At almost the same time, the final report of the Select committee
into the Increase in Prisoner Population was tabled. We are very
pleased with the report and its recommendations as they reflect
strongly the need to stop using prison for non-violent, relatively
less serious offenders and to divert more remandees from prison.

We urge everyone to look up the report on the web:

http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/Committee.nsf/Inquiries?Open

or if you are unable to do that to request a copy from the Committee on

92303544

We urge each of you to write to the Premier, The Attorney General and
the Minister for Corrective Services (addresses / emails follow)
calling upon the government to implement the recommendations of the
interim report (on women) and the final report.
