Hi all
Detainees at Maribyrnong Detention Centre ended their hunger strike
Sunday evening (27 January). They did so because they feel they have
achieved most of their goals for this part of their struggle, in getting
the message out to Australian people about the plight of refugees. The
rallies have shown them that support for refugee rights in Australia is
growing.
35 began the hunger strike on 22 January, fasting 6 days.They remain
committed to a continuing campaign to end mandatory detention.
They say they came to Australia to survive persecution and they look
forward to being released as soon as possible. The want their lives and
they want freedom. However, if necessary, the hunger strike will be
started again. Maribyrnong detainees send a strong message of
appreciation and support for the struggle of the Refugee Action
Collectives/Committees around Australia.
The hunger strike has spread to Curtin and Port Hedland detention
centres. RAC will continue the campaign to close down the detention
centres and end mandatory detention - rally on Saturday, 2 February 1pm
at the State Library in Melbourne. Phone Giada 0408 538 916.
