PRESS RELEASE

Friday 23 August

An enthusiastic group of people at the ANU today formed a Canberra-based
collective dedicated to organising a local affinity group to travel to
the national Close Pine Gap demonstration on 5th, 6th and 7th of
October. They are planning a bus to leave Canberra on Tuesday 2 October
to make the trek to Alice Springs where thousands of activists are
expected to protest against the presence of Pine Gap in Australia.

The collective is affiliated with the Sydney based Anti-Bases Coalition
that publicly plans to coordinate the demonstration against Pine Gap.
(www.anti-bases.org) Organisers of the Canberra group believe the
three-day bus trip across Australia could be a bit difficult for most
people. They are planning information and fund-raising evenings for
those who would like to be involved. Support is expected from unions and
student associations throughout Canberra. An information table will be
maintained immediately in Garema Place every Friday evening and in
September on Saturday mornings. The trip will be planned at public
meetings at 6pm every Monday until October at the Students Union ANU.

Yvonne Francis of the Nuclear Disarmament Party said today "We support
the Close Pine Gap initiative wholeheartedly. Pine Gap is only 20
kilometres away from Alice Springs in central Australia, a place
tourists love and Australians are proud of. But nobody really knows what
is going on at Pine Gap. pine Gap is simply an American spy base on
Australian soil, linking us to Bush's nuclear madness and possibly even
spying on us. Until Australia turns around and starts building a
peaceful, non-nuclear Pacific region, there will be actions to get rid
of Pine Gap."
