PRESS RELEASE
Theater of Cacophany presents
A FEW STEPS NOT HERE NOT THERE
written by Mammad Aidani, directed by Lloyd Jones,
performed by Peter Finlay
"But the trees are blossoming again. This city, as big as it is, its
streets as wide as they are, swallows me, within its mouth..."
Each of us, whichever city of place we live in, has a personal
perspective about it. In the "city" of the play (perhaps a city within a
city?), the narrator represents those who live in isolation. He is at
the mercy of others to be smiled at, to be embraced, to be loved, to be
included... or not. The collective life of the city awaits him,
seemingly just beyond his reach.
This epic journey dances to the tune of those deeply visual flashes and
poetic rhythms, which characterize Mammad Aidani's unconventional, yet
engaging writing style. The audience is led through the mind-pictures of
a displaced man, faced with confronting his inner soul, searching for a
sense of belonging in the claustrophobic jungle and vast empty spaces
that make up "the city".
For this anonymous man, the world out there is full of love, free of
hate, a place where innocence is presumed as the norm. The individual in
limbo is the antithesis of Aidani's ultimate faith in our humanity : the
sharing of our feelings for each other, for ourselves as individuals,
and for our surroundings.
This production is timely given the national crisis concerning the way
in which our government has been handling the complex issue of asylum
seekers. Why does our government choose to turn a blind eye to the
plight of these desperate people?
This play has its roots in the writer's experience arising from
displacement and war. It also draws on the alienation Aidani has
experienced in the different cities lived in since he left Iran in the
1980's. The play also has reverberations for any amongst us who, at some
point in our lives, have experienced a sense of threat, rejection, or
disconnection.
Peter Finlay, one of Australia's most respected and experienced actors,
has taken on this monumental solo performance which invites one and all
to enter the outwardly depressing world of the disconnected. Yet there
is also the opportunity to share, and identify with, the narrator's
inner strengths, those powers we draw upon as human beings, in order to
survive : hope, love, humour, compassion, mutual respect, attachment to
place.
"... To overcome. That's the point, to overcome, constantly... Otherwise
I'll never become..."
