ALP and Democrats Cower to Howard on Senate Inquiry into Iraq War
Greens Senators Bob Brown and Kerry Nettle have condemned the ALP and
Democrats for voting down a a Senate committee into the looming war
with Iraq.
"The United States has had a full Senate inquiry into the issue but in
Australia the Government and Opposition and now the Democrats keep
putting off the scrutiny of a proper public inquiry," Senator Brown
said.
"The recent war-mongering comments from Vice President Dick Cheney
make the need for a Senate inquiry all the more urgent," Senator Brown
said.
"The ALP should not be waiting on John Howard's pleasure. The
opposition is failing to get into the public debate all the necessary
information," Senator Nettle said.
"A war with Iraq could involve the killing of thousands of innocent
Iraqis and many Australians, especially if its leads to a wider
conflagration.
"The Australian public and the Senate have the right to all the facts.
The ALP and Government stand condemned for refusing an inquiry on the
issues surrounding Australian involvement in a war.
"So far the ALP hasn't had the guts to properly take on John Howard
over war with Iraq. They are cowered by him.
"We will continue to pursue the issue of a Senate inquiry when
parliament returns in September," Senator Nettle said.
