Media Release : Good move for ABC to Re-employ Experienced Staff
The Age newspaper today reported 40 ABC staff who left the broadcaster
during the purge by former managing director Jonathan Shier are back at
work with the ABC, with 37 of them having been re-employed. Questions
are being asked about the appropriateness of rehiring staff who have
been paid redundancies.
"When recruiting staff, the ABC should appoint the best people for the
job. It is not surprising that its recent appointees include experienced
former ABC staff," said Terry Laidler, a Friends of the ABC spokesperson.
"There is no good reason why staff forced out for reasons unrelated to
their work performance should be excluded from working for the
broadcaster again. To preclude capable staff would simply compound the
damage already done to the ABC.
"Friends only wishes the ABC had sufficient funds and could attract back
to the ABC more of the talented staff lost in the short but destructive
Shier-era.
"The damage was done and unnecessary cost incurred when Mr Shier pushed
out talented staff in the first place.
"The fault and responsibility for the waste of scarce ABC resources to
pay redundancies lies with the Federal Government and ABC Board members
who did its bidding by appointing Mr Shier," said Mr Laidler.
