Typing the path into a browser does not work to run the Acrobat executable on my computers so I don't think that is telling you much. However, you also have a major typo, because in Windows you should be using back slashes not forward slashes. If you made a similar error in Options -customize - Launch that could explain a lot.

Hi Ward

Thanks for the explanation. I typed "C:/Program Files/Adobe/Reader 9.0/ReaderAcroRd32" into FireFox and IE browsers and "File not found".

Adobe pdf files open in my PaperPort application, no problems, but not if I've attached a PaperPort pdf file to Legacy via the File button in Picture Gallery and try to open it from the Legacy Icon.

With Adobe I'm in uncharted waters for me so I don't even know the right questions to ask!

Thanks, Ward
Tom

The 'full version' is not free, so you would know if you had purchased it. It is called Adobe Acrobat (not Acrobat.com). It has the capability to change and manipulate PDF files, not just read them. When reading PDFs, Acrobat is not constrained to limited user rights that might have been defined for the PDF for Reader.

Your installation looks clean. There could be something bad in your Reader settings, but I don't see why a PDF would open outside Legacy and not open within Legacy. Does the PDF open within other applications? Try typing the path into your browser's address bar.

Producing a PDF report from within Legacy is different. They are using a non-Adobe library to do that. (Last I checked, it was producing an outdated version of the PDF format.)

Hi Valerie

I don't fully understand what you're saying here. What do you mean by a full version of Adobe?
In Control Panel I have listed:

Acrobat.com installed on 23/8/2009 (Is this what you are referring to?)
Adobe AIR installed on 23/8/2009
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX installed on 19/2/2009
Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin installed on 1/8/2009
Adobe Media Player installed on 25/8/2009
Adobe Reader 9.1.3 installed on 25/8/2009

On the Adobe web site I cannot find any reference to a full version. What am I missing, Valerie?

Regards
Tom

For ALL Adobe users:

1. Version 7.0 of the full version or the Reader is the minimum version you
should have on your system.
2. If you installed Adobe Reader 9.0 -- and then installed a full Adobe
system lower than 9.0 (6,7, or 8) -- YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS
a. You must first UNINSTALL the Adobe Reader 9.0 b. Install the older FULL version of Adobe
c. Finally, install the Adobe Reader 9.0

This will clear up your registry issues for both XP & Vista.

Thanks for replies Evert, C.G. Ouimet & Ron.

I received an email reply from Ken at Legacy Support a little while ago & he suggested unlikely but possible Windows Registry errors. Rings true with Evert's comments. How does one goes about checking for Registry errors?

Legacy Support also mentioned something I had tried but I tried it again. Ken said I could over-ride Legacy's customise-launch by typing in the full path for Adobe Reader line 4 at Options -> customise -> Launch. But typing in the path for Adobe Reader doesn't open the Adobe Reader with a click on the Test Launch button. I typed in the path for a different reader (PaperPort) and I clicked on the Test Launch button & it worked; ie, opened the PaperPort reader.

Also in Reports I cannot produce a pdf report by either way of doing it, and this is a different function from the Picture Gallery scenario.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone,
Tom
PS: Just read Darlene's email & got all excited. Tried what she suggested but it didn't work for me; but I'm not very knowing about those types of settings. It's after midnight in my neck o' the woods & I'm too tired to go further! :>) Sounds pretty good though if the trouble is an Adobe setting. Who is our Adobe Settings expert? LOL.
Thank you Darlene.

Adobe 4 will not read many of the newer PDF files. Try upgrading to a newer Adobe or get one of the free alternatives and see if that helps.
