Colin I presume that you have this child as the son of the couple, hence the error message. As he was born 3 yrs after the death of the husband then he never was part of the relationship. If you unlink the child from the parents and then select him as the current person, link him back to just the widow, you should get him showing as the son of the widow and "unknown" - ie a second "marriage". I presume that you will also want to link him to his birth mother as well, which will give a similar result - ie mother and "unknown" father. This will leave you with the child and two parents, one of whom you mark as an adoptive parent.
