I am able to avoid all these issues by keeping my main Legacy file and Pictures on a USB drive plugged into my desktop. That way when I switch to my laptop all I have to do is plug in the USB drive and all the files are availble. When you do this you have to do several things initially. The first is make sure you give the USB drive has the same drive letter on both machines. I then periodically sync the USB to a duplicate set of files on my desktop that is backed up daily by Mozy.
