Virginia, If I'm understanding you correctly, you are the one translating the information, using a variety of methods for translating, no? If so, the source is the German gedcom, and I would use the Gedcom file template in SourceWriter, adding a Comment that I translated it using "x and so" methods.
I'm confused about why you are asking which template to use if you are using the Basic Source system...there is only one template in the Basic Source system. Regardless, my answer would be the same: enter the Gedcom as the source, with a Comment that you translated the gedcom and how you did it (since I'm assuming from your comments that you are not fluent in German).
