Jim, Thank you for that. You have it correct regarding the name change, the reasons for which I am not yet privy, no doubt I will be told in due course.
I am a "warts and all" person when it comes to family research, you cannot change what has happened, even though your niece has tried. I can understand name changes and moving due to violent partners but some family members try to rewrite their fmaily history for no logical reason except that it suits them and when that is done the only person they are fooling is themselves. We published a 300 page book on my wife's maternal ancestors a couple of years ago and one line of the family wanted to totally rewrite their branch of the family. The details they presented us with bore no resemblance to fact and we declined to publish that line as they wanted. She changed her name to Jones, so that is an AKA. You can put a citation with the AKA indicating why she changed her name from Smith to Jones, but she should show with both names so those looking for Smith can find her, as can those searching for Jones. They actually went back and changed the family records so her step children now have birth certificates listing her as their natural mother. She doesn't want to give me any information about their real mother at all. I'm treading carefully so as to not make it a family crisis, but I think my signature line says it best.
