Tony: I really think you've already found the best solution in creating unknown individuals to provide the links. I do the same thing and have a master source called "NOTE." Using that, I add source detail explaining the reason for the unknowns. It may not be elegant, but unknowns are pretty much unavoidable.
The only slip you've made is to post in HTML. List rules require Plain Text. Welcome to the group! For example, one of my top-level ancestors appears in a census with a sister and granddaughter living with her. I don't know which of her sons is father to the granddaughter and I know nothing about her parents. However, I do want to record the existence of the sister and the granddaughter. The only way that I can think of, is to invent an "unknown" son and link the granddaughter to him and to invent an unknown father and link the sister via him. This isn't very elegant, especially when I produce an ancestor book and have people named "unknown" floating around the place. Does anyone have a more elegant solution?
