Lee:

I record the full name with diacriticals as the preferred name. Because the
diacriticals aren't found in some web searches and because people search in
different ways, I add two other versions as alternates (aka's). So I have:

Pierre (given name) Cormier dit De La Côté (preferred/primary surname)
Pierre Cormier
Pierre Cormier dit De La Cote (without diacriticals)

It's something of a bother, but I post at RootsWeb and was surprised to find
that the technically correct version wasn't picked up in searches. By the way,
a hyphenated name like Marie-Charlotte isn't found either, so I add an
alternate without the hyphen.

Kirsten

How does one record dit names? I have French and Canadian-French ancestry plus
Quebec church records showing the dit names.
