Mike,

It is my view that the template for the English/Welsh certificates is wrong,
because, as you correctly say, the index reference is not part of the
certificate. This is one of those instances where I do not use that line in
the detail source, but I do for the Index, in other words, I cite the Index
and Certificate Sources separately.

I understand that the index is included in Evidence Explained (I don't have
the book) as part of the Certificate Source, and if so it is simply wrong!

The actual certificate for a marriage is issued by the church or register
office at the time of the marriage. All other "certificates" are certified
copies which can be obtained from the local office or the GRO. Both in law
and generally these are all accepted as being the equivalent of the original
certificate, and I treat them as I would treat an original.
