Hi Laura, Have you tried going to Customize>Colors, in the colors screen about half way down on the right side you will see three buttons labeled Male, Female and Unknown, have you tried changing the colors until you find a color that will show up clearer when the bold type is used.
I'm using a light shade of dark blue for Male, a light shade of red for Female and a light shade of green for Unknown. The bold type is quite a bit darker. This works for me.
