Rich, I don't think that they are any different from any other family, except that their trees are more readily available. The number of descendants which one has available depends on how many generations one goes back and which non-direct line ancestors one wishes to include.
Status is not relevent. After around 10years research I have some 4000 "relatives" ie those with a connection to my family, no matter how distant. Where very large files are likely to be more more common are with One-Name studies, especially when many people are contributing their research. In my view, many number counters simply download trees from, say Ancestry, without checking each record to ensure its accuracy and present it as their own work. To my mind this is not genealogy, and I certainly would not find any satisfaction in doing this. A tree of 2000 well researched and documented individuals is much more valuable historically, and to the family involved. So, Graham, I agree with you. You are missing nothing and probably have a much superior tree than number crunchers. However, I am not suggesting that all large trees may be defective, just many of them!
