You can think of it that way if you want. The developers are always striving to correct anything users report wrong plus they will make some improvements along the way.
You don't have to download them, but it is often best if you do. Legacy is a real stable problem, but if you are worried about a new version messing up your family data, that can be prevented by making and faithful backups.
