Hi John
In GEDCOM Import / Customise you can select each tag (item) to import. I
have just bastardised a gedcom file to include two extra lines, as a trial -
I changed a valid name, given and surname to:
1 NAME Fred /Dagg/
2 GIVN Fred
2 SURN Dagg
2 ALIA John John
2 NICK Tonytony
Note the two extra lines ALIA and NICK. Legacy imported all this changed
data as you suggest, and showed ALIA as a valid tag, but did not list NICK,
nor did it say it was invalid. Both ALIA and NICK ended up as Alternate
Names, as you found. The GEDCOM Items are listed in Legacy Help - but very
hard to find!! Go to Help / Search / gedcom items / User-Defined GEDCOM
Tags - gives you the list. NICK is not acknowledged. However _AKA is. But
when trying with the _AKA tag the import is exactly the same (not listed but
data imported into Alt Names).
I then tried a rogue tag ENAM, and this gives you the option in Legacy to
map this rogue tag to a recognised tag - and the choice includes - wait for
it - ALIA and NICK (Supported GEDOM Tags).
So my suggestion is that if you want to control the import, and put the ALIA
and NICK items (or any for that matter) in specific fields, but Legacy is
not giving you the choice, then:
1 Open the GEDCOM file in a text editor and find and replace the tag you
want to see with an "odd" one, eg AAA1, AAA2 etc.
2 Save the modified GEDCOM with a new name (ending in .ged) (just in
case).
3 Import the new GEDCOM and map the odd tags to wherever you want (from
the Legacy list under Map to a Recognised Tag).
Cheers, Brett

Thank you Dennis
You are spot-on for interpretation. I had never used Customise on an Import
so I did not realise it's potential. Thanks again for that prompt. Nothing
in Help about that feature?
I have that box open & it offers the tag ALIA to accept or reject & that
would solve 99% of my problem.
However the tag NICK is not mentioned in the Import Items (tags) which is a
mystery. It would have been my choice to Remove that tag as my file does
have a few ALIAs. Surname Odes = Woods (England), & Pogue = Pollock
(Ireland) & these are ALIA(s)'s
Would be nice to know how Legacy deals with NICK & *why it does not show* as
it is definitely being processed to GIVN from my experience.
John

Your original post said something about the two alt. names being the
same. From this post I am guessing that you mean the incoming GEDCOM
contains a NICK tag and an ALIA tag that have the same values for a
given individual. And I will further assume that the program that
creates the GEDCOM is consistent and always creates both tags when a
person has an alt. name. If so, then on the import into Legacy, why not
use Customize to tell Legacy to ignore either NICK or ALIA? I haven't
tried it since I don't have my hands on a GEDCOM that I can test with.
