The Verifier is a tool that looks at dates attached to a location (USA only)
and knows when each county in the USA was created. So if your date is for
someone born in a place before the county existed, the program 'warns' you that
that fact is wrong. You have to find out for yourself which county the place
was actually in. That is why most of us that have Animap, use it.

I don't know what the county verifier is - the warning I got that it wasn't a
county? I am trying out Legacy, thinking of switching from another program. I
do have a little program that I used to check counties so I could do without
the verifier. The majority of my database involves one county so I am not in
doubt. My issue is some of the rest of them. Your suggestion is good for me.

Being farmers I haven't really had to deal with the town change issue.

I've struggled with this myself and finally have decided to abandon the "four
comma" standard.  For me, this means not using the County Verifier.  You can
still verify the county manually, however.
If you can get over not having the verifier, one option is to use something
like Jones (now Smith).  You could also just put Jones and put Smith in the
notes.
What is more challenging to me is when town lines changed, which is just a
common as county lines.  Villages and towns also change their organization (for
example from village to city).  It seems the only way to get it right is to
research the history of each location.
Anyway, my suggestion to you is to use the nka standard that you are already
using, and verify the county manually.
