I see your point, but I prefer utilizing the extra note fields to indicate the changes in what a place was called. For example, why put the Colony of Massachusetts or Upper Canada and create duplicate place names for the exact same place, just called a different name in certain times. To me, that is better explained in a simple note so duplicate place names are not created unnecessarily, but some may disagree.
