Hi again Ludie. I'm glad you were finally able to get on the list.

There's another topic taking everyone's attention right now. But the
master source names are separate from the details which are attached to
the individual person's records. In other words, if you were to
COMBINE two master source names together, you should not loose any
detail that is attached to the individual persons' records. The details
should still be there, but the two sources you just combined would then
point to all the records using the new source name. It's always a good
idea, however, to work with a COPY of your file until you find out
exactly how this is going to work for you.

There is a new system with Legacy version 7 which is called SOURCE
WRITER. It is a sophisticated way of making sure you incorporate
everything a source should normally contain, but it isn't always easy to
get the desired result, so you do have to experiment with it some. You
can also use the BASIC FORMAT, which is the older method before SOURCE
WRITER was introduced. If you need to combine a BASIC source with a
SOURCE WRITER source, you can't do it in Legacy. However, there is a
product called LTools, which is an add-on product that was produced by a
Legacy user, Dennis Kowalleck, that will allow you to combinee a BASIC
source with a SOURCE WRITER source.

Here's the link for that: http://zippersoftware.com/ LTools does a
bunch of things, but I'm just a new user. The deluxe features are
available for only $10.95.

Often you can incorporate the information into your master source
record. So, in those cases the detail which you attach to an
individual's record might be completely BLANK, because no further
explanation is needed. Just remember to incorporate the information in
the master source name that will not change for that particular
source. The detail part of the record should be with the person's
individual record. This will also avoid too many sources, which makes
the database messy and harder to navigate.

I have not always had success yet combining one SOURCE WRITER source
with another, and I'm not sure why it won't always work. But the
combining features are available, when they work, if you go to VIEW /
MASTER LISTS / SOURCE from the MENU Bar. Maybe someone else can chime
in here. Welcome to Legacy. It's a great product and I'm sure you
will enjoy it. --Jerry in Michigan
