I do not know what your results were at track, but I tested free OCR and
my results were excellent.  I scanned several pages of documents
consisting of a combination of newspaper articles in column format and
straight text in all cases my success rate on transferring to text was
close to 98%.

One thing I did notice: all whitespace was removed.  In other words,
blank lines between paragraphs and indents at the start of paragraphs
were ignored. this may be a problem for those purists who insist that
OCR programs must preserve format.
