I have not found a way to alter the automatic formating, other than to occasionally subvert the intention by placing information in unintended fields. But I'm responding because of your last sentence about editing the GED file. As noted in a recent thread (and previous threads), the GEDCOM format is too simplistic for the complex SourceWriter formatting. IF your main target is GEDCOM, you would be better off with your second choice: creating Basic sources from the start. SourceWriter sources get converted to Basic during the export, and sometimes the conversion makes a mess of it.

For example, there might be a "Title" field. On some forms this might output with quotes around it, others it might be italics. I was wondering if I could force it to be one or the other. Also on the forms that have a "Format" field, sometimes they come out in capitals, other times not, depending on the form. ie "Database" vs "database". It does not matter if I type the word in capitals or not. Also if I try to delete that field it will automatically populate with a default value. I cannot have it blank. I know I can edit the GED file after the fact to get things to look like I want, or don't use SourceWriter, but there (as always) are plusses and minuses to whatever I do. Thanks!
