Thanks Garry

I may be expecting too much but it is daunting to think of hand entering the
amount of information that is missing.
Thanks for replying. Barbara

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Transfer of data from Sierra Generations

Hi
I have been a Legacy user since version 2, but I can still recall some of
the issues I had moving my family tree data across to Legacy from another
family tree programme (not Generations).
One of the issues with the Gedcom file format is that there are different
versions of it. The other issue you encounter are differences in the
different family tree programmes and that is basically what the issue is
here .
Generations and Legacy are different, and therefore not everything is going
to move across from one to the other using the Gedcom format in quite the
way you might be expecting it too.

I would think all your vital data, birth, death etc, information will, but
some things will not. SO check your Legacy file after the transfer is
complete and tidy up if necessary. You may have to move some information
manually by retyping it in the correct field

Others on the list will probably have worthwhile suggestions, especially if
they have had experience with Generations

Subject: [LegacyUG] Transfer of data from Sierra Generations

Hello

I am new to this group and Legacy but not new to Genealogy and now have
almost 2000 people in my tree. Like many others I have loved the
Generations software and have nursed it through many versions of Windows
(now Windows 7) and it is no longer reliable enough to not have another
program plus the newer software has other advantages. I chose Legacy
because it most reminded me of Generations in it family card! Having
transferred a Gedcom from Generations to Legacy I find that despite telling
it to put data it does not know where to put into notes it is not
transferring the memo field and I have a lot of information in there (for
example) for the memo associated with a death I have put cause of death.
Also in my Generations notes I have put sources next to particular pieces of
information and these associations have not transferred.

Apologies to the vast majority of users who will not be interested but I am
hoping that some people have done this recently enough to remember any fixes
and might be able to help.
