That's a difficult one to diagnose but it's not likely related to Legacy (at least not in the sense of it being a program error).
Of course application lock-ups can happen with all software and it all versions of Windows. I've had the exact behavior happen that your talking about in Windows Vista and 7 and with application such as Microsoft Word and Excel. The 'going dim' behavior is like Windows way of saying "I'm working, don't bother me". Usually when this happens I walk away from the computer and try to give it time to resolve itself which sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. To resolve this, you need to look outside of the Legacy software as it's mostly likely some sort of computer resources issue. A couple of suggestions: 1. Make sure your virus scanning software is up-to-date and that you have run a scan recently. It's almost certainly NOT virus related but that's always a good place to start 2. Work on doing some basic computer optimization. I would start by running the disk defragmentation software that comes with Windows. It's not all that great but it's free and already installed. If it doesn't take too long, run it at least 2 or 3 times (a single run doesn't get the job done) 3. Find and run some Windows Optimization software. There are many out there, some better than others, and in all price ranges. Some suggestions/examples of products I'm familiar with are: * WinOptimizer 7 by AShampoo Software (free trial available) - http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/2506/System_Utilities/Ashampoo-WinOptimizer-7 * Registry Doctor (free trial available) - http://download.cnet.com/Registry-Doctor/3000-2094_4-10201318.html You can also find more information and programs on Kim Komando's website. The keywords your looking for are "optimizer" (or optimize), '"defrag" or "defragmentation", and 'registry cleaner' and other variations. There is no guarantee that this will solve the problem but there are good maintenance things to do.
