Access is the front-end (gui) to the underlying Jet database engine,
which hasn't had a significant update since 2003. So products like
Access 2010 are just glitz (i.e. "lipstick on a pig").

Jet is considered deprecated technology and is only being maintained by
MS because of the broad user base. It is still pretty handy for
single-user desktop application development. But MS has moved on to
newer products like SQL Server Express.
